The reason was good — they defended themselves in this way from Leshy. The people believed that on this day he runs from one village to another and fools around — he scatters hay everywhere. And Leshy also frightened passers-by with inhuman cries.
By the way, several days were dedicated to Leshy in the folk calendar. In particular, it was believed that on September 27, the goblin overtakes animals in the forest, and therefore, they tried not to leave the house without special need. In October, there was also a time when Leshy was honored and said that he fell into the ground to wait out the winter, but before that he raged a lot, which is why it is dangerous to meet him.
In general, Leshy was very revered in Rus’, because he was a kind spirit who made sure that no one did any harm to the economy. They said that Leshy would never harm people who do good deeds. So, they believed that such a spirit helps to get out of the forest and not get lost, and on the contrary, he forced evil people to constantly stray along the forest paths. Those who met Leshy said that in appearance he might resemble some kind of relative or acquaintance. However, Lesh is always tied with a red sash — this is what helps to recognize the spirit. Also, the left half of his caftan is open, and the shoes are put on from the left foot to the right, and vice versa.
