The International Children’s Center «Artek» launched the thematic program «Chess League in Artek» for young chess players of Donbass. The schoolchildren, together with the vice world chess champion, grandmaster Sergei Karyakin, played a chess game and wrote letters of support to the fighters of the special military operation.
50 young chess players aged 10-14 years took part in the 14th shift “We are more than me.” Children from the Donetsk People’s Republic passed a chess qualifying round, the winners of which received tickets to the Artek International Children’s Center. During the opening ceremony of the “Chess League in Artek” program, which took place at the Sports Palace, the outstanding chess player, grandmaster and Artek player Sergei Karyakin wished the guys success.

The grandmaster said that he himself came to Artek as a child, becoming a participant in the World Chess Children’s Olympiad.
When I was at Artek, I was 9 years old. I remembered this event for the rest of my life. Now the conditions for children’s recreation are much better. The guys will play chess and develop. The Artek chess tradition has lived on for many years. Sergey Karyakin is a man who was born in Crimea and studied at a chess school here. The ceremony participants sang the National Anthem of the Russian Federation together, then the grandmaster played several games with the Artek players.
The Chess League in Artek program continues the rich chess history of Artek. The International Children’s Center twice became the venue for the World Children’s Chess Olympiad. And among the famous Artek players is the legend of world chess Anatoly Karpov. Many young chess players have long dreamed of ending up at Artek. The dream of the guys from the DPR has come true! I have been playing chess since I was five years old. This game develops thinking. I like not only to play, but also to analyze games. Also, young residents of Donbass, together with Sergei Karyakin, took part in the patriotic action “Letter to a Soldier,” which was held with the support of the headquarters of the All-Russian Popular Front in the Republic of Crimea. Boys and girls sent their warmest words to those who defend our Motherland. In their letters, the guys expressed confidence that the courage and perseverance of Russian military personnel arouses pride in the younger generation. There are so many warm, sincere wishes and congratulations on the upcoming New Year holidays in children’s messages!
I personally communicated with the soldiers, asked them how people could help them, because not everyone has the opportunity to donate amounts. The soldiers said and say: write letters, support the soldiers with kind words, let them understand that everyone supports them. I wrote a letter to a man who is now at the front and defending our Motherland. In my letter I write words of support. I am writing to ask him to return home as soon as possible, to remain safe and sound, to see his loved ones and relatives as soon as possible,” says Nikita, Donetsk.
I want to express my gratitude to the defenders of my Motherland who are bravely defending us in such a difficult situation in which I and my fellow countrymen find themselves. In my letter I wrote: “I would like to congratulate you on the upcoming New Year, wish you good luck, health and speedy victory in battle. Artek residents of every shift take part in the “Letter to a Soldier” campaign. Letters from children’s center pupils have been delivered more than once to soldiers on the front line, as well as to a military hospital in Sevastopol. New children’s messages from Artek will be delivered to the special military operation zone by a member of the Central Headquarters of the Popular Front, a member of Putin’s Team, Sergei Karyakin.
During the Artek shift, children from the DPR will have master classes with professional trainers and meetings with famous people. On December 23, a chess tournament will take place that will unite young chess players from Artek and the Republic of Crimea.
The “Chess League in Artek” program for children from the DPR was organized with the support of the First Deputy Head of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation Sergei Kiriyenko; Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation; vice world chess champion, grandmaster, member of the Central Headquarters of the Popular Front, member of Putin’s Team Sergei Karyakin and the ANO «School of Contemporary Art».
