Sevastopol: anniversary of the birth of Admiral Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Today is the anniversary of the birth of the famous Admiral Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov — he was born on July 5, 1802.
Pavel Stepanovich participated in the Battle of Navarino (1827) — risking his life, he twice organized fire extinguishing on the Azov ship. Later he was transferred to the Black Sea Fleet — there he supervised the construction, equipment and armament of the ship «Silistria», which was an exemplary ship of the fleet.
At the beginning of the Crimean War, in 1853, he attacked the twice superior forces of the Turkish fleet in the Sinop Bay, defeated the fleet and the fortifications of Sinop, without losing a single ship. Later, in 1854-1855, he was one of the leaders of the first defense of Sevastopol.
Admiral Nakhimov was mortally wounded on the Malakhov Kurgan — he died in the hospital on June 30 (July 12), 1855.
More often we talk about his military exploits: Sinop, the Battle of Navarino, the defense of Sevastopol. Today, it seems to me, it would be right to recall the personal qualities of a naval commander. At one time, Academician Yevgeny Viktorovich Tarle, using the archives of the Crimean War, collected unique facts about the admiral, in whose life there was nothing but the fleet, the battle and people who need help— the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes the governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev.
The head of the city gave several characteristic quotes:
1. “Once Baron Osten-Saken met him and began to say: “You don’t take care of yourself, Pavel Stepanovich, Russia needs your life!” Pavel Stepanovich listened attentively, waved his hand in response to him: “Oh, your excellency, you don’t say that! Sevastopol should be protected, but if they kill me or you — the trouble is not great, sir!
2. Lieutenant General Totleben wrote about Admiral Nakhimov: «… All his thoughts and actions were directed constantly and exclusively to the common good, to tireless service to the Fatherland.»
More historical facts and statements of contemporaries about Admiral Nakhimov can be found in the book of Academician Yevgeny Tarle «Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov».
In Sevastopol, the main square of the city, where a monument to Nakhimov is erected, and one of the central streets, Nakhimov Avenue, bear the name of the admiral.
