Sevastopol Blood Center celebrated the anniversary — 60 years since the creation

For 60 years, the blood center of Sevastopol has grown from a small department at a city hospital in a high -tech medical center, which plays a key role in ensuring the safety and accessibility of donated blood in the city.

The first city blood transfusion station was opened on August 1, 1965, less than a dozen specialists worked there. Today, 88 highly qualified employees work here.

The institution consists of twelve departments: laboratory diagnostics, selection of donor personnel, blood quality control, field organization, technical and administrative services. There are specialized departments of information security and transfusiology.

Sevastopol Blood Center is equipped with modern equipment. All basic processes are automated. Thanks to multi -stage control, patients are guaranteed complete safety. The transmission of any disease through blood is completely excluded. At the same time, we can accept dozens of donors, and refrigerators are designed to store thousands of liters of blood,-quoted the press service of the Government of Sevastopol and. O. In 2021, with the opening of a new modular building, the conditions for donors, staff, as well as for the harvesting, processing and storage of blood and its components, improved. Equipped with modern equipment, it fully ensures the safety of blood and its components. There are also new opportunities for the study of biological materials.

Over the past year, 8600 liters of blood were prepared. Particular attention is paid to the production of thrombocultates, the need for which is especially high among the department of therapy, surgery and pediatrics of urban healthcare. Modern technologies allow red blood cells to freeze. If, with ordinary storage, they are suitable for only 5 days, then in frozen form they can be stored for 5 years. This allows you to make reserves of rare blood groups— says Vadim antiologists.

The center actively involves Sevastopol in the donor movement. Outbound events, lectures and promotions to attract donors are held. Since 2020, it has become the center for the selection of bone marrow donors and has been cooperating with the Kirov Research Institute of Hematology.
