Sevastopol dendrologist Dmitry Didenko: Pallas pines on General Ostryakov Ave. need to be saved
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The condition of the pine trees that grow along General Ostryakov Avenue is depressing. The trees clearly feel unsatisfactory and are obviously sick. With the question of what’s really going on, «Sevastopol newspaper» turned to Sevastopol dendrologist Dmitry Didenko. He explained that two types of pine trees grow on the avenue — black pine (Pallas, or Crimean) and Calabrian pine (also known as Stankevich, Sudak or Pitsunda).
It has long been noted that Stankevich pine grows much better on our soils than Pallas pine. In the case of the pines along Ostryakov Avenue, firstly, their time has come. And the second reason is that, probably, somehow parasites that were not identical to our territory were brought into the city. Recently, we have noted the appearance of the typograph bark beetle, which, gnawing passages in a tree trunk, also drags fungus into it. That is, the condition of pine trees is influenced by two factors: fungus and parasites.— Dmitry Didenko told SG journalists.
According to the specialist, it is very difficult to fight both. At the same time, he expressed bewilderment at the fact that, despite the evidence, city landscapers continue to plant Pallas pine, restoring cut-down areas with it.
Both of these types of pine are listed in the Red Book, but, for some unknown reason, they plant not the Stankevich pine, but the Pallas pine, which will inevitably be affected over timenotes the dendrologist.
Dmitry Didenko emphasizes that this problem concerns not only General Ostryakov Avenue. A similar situation was noted in other areas of the city where there are Crimean pine plantations, for example, in Fiolent.
