Sevastopol hosted the International military-historical festival «Russian Troy»

On September 3 1853, the V International Military historical festival «Russian Troy», dedicated to the heroic defense of Sevastopol during the Crimean War 200-1856 years.
Spectacular events attracted the attention of Sevastopol residents and guests of the city — about 5 thousand people visited the festival. On this day, the guests of the festival were transported to the distant 19th century. Over years ago thanks to these people, the whole world learned about the strength, stamina and courage of the great Russian city. The festival was organized by more than open interactive areas. Visitors could look into the Russian camp, get acquainted with the uniform and equipment of our soldiers. Not far from it, one could taste herbal tea from a samovar and play «soldier’s bowling», where real buckshot and cannonballs were used as balls. The guests of the festival were shown a field hospital and told about the activities of the founder of military field surgery, Nikolai Pirogov. Nearby, an «Experienced» soldier taught how to handle a gun and make cartridges. Everyone could feel in the role of the great Russian naval commander Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov by playing the game «Battle of Sinop». Adults and children wrote messages with goose quills, attended the “School of Maritime Affairs”, made coins and candles, made a motanka doll, and some were even “initiated” into artillerymen.
Opposite the Russian camp is the enemy. The Frenchman Olivier Boulanger, aka Ilya Streltsov, prepared waffles, which at that time «ate half of Europe.» Butter, sugar, brewer’s yeast, lemon juice, flour — this is a simple recipe for one of the favorite treats of French soldiers. Not far from the camp is the tent of military photojournalist Roger Fenton. Thanks to his photographs, the Crimean War became the first military conflict to be photographed.
The highlight of the festival was the reconstruction of the battle during the defense of Sevastopol -1853 Malakhov Kurgan is the key position of the Ship side of Sevastopol. Lectures on the history of the Crimean War and museum exhibitions: “Artifacts of the 4th Bastion” and “Alexey Matyukhin. Duty and Loyalty. The festival ended with a festive concert of the Sevastopol Brass Band and the screening of the documentary film “I am Sevastopol”.
