Sevastopol police: beware of phone scammers
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The Sevastopol police emphasizes that cases of telephone fraud committed against the elderly continue to be registered in the city.
Using the effect of surprise and playing on feelings of anxiety for loved ones, the attackers make a phone call and, posing as family members of an elderly person, or posing as law enforcement officers or medical workers, report that his relative was in a traffic accident, injured or detained by the police for a crime.
Under the pretext of «urgent payment for treatment», «compensation for damage to the victim», giving a bribe for not being held accountable, the criminals demand that a significant amount of money be immediately transferred to them. At the same time, scammers may have some information about you and your family members (for example, know that they have a car, address you by name and patronymic, etc.).
In one of the recent cases, a 84-year-old local resident who suffered from intruders turned to the Russian MIA for the Leninsky District. The police found that an unfamiliar woman called the victim on a landline phone and said that her daughter had been in a traffic accident and was hospitalized in a medical facility. To “help” a relative, the stranger demanded a large sum of money. Believing her words, the pensioner handed over one hundred thousand rubles to the scammers through a courier.
Note that she knew about the specified fraudulent scheme, but caught off guard by an unexpected call, she complied with the requirements of the swindlers. On this fact, employees of the internal affairs bodies initiated a criminal case and measures are being taken to identify and search for criminals.
In order to prevent such crimes, the police of Sevastopol asks to take precautionary measures. Tell family and friends of the elderly about the need to comply with them. When receiving the above calls, it is necessary to remain calm and reasonable, not trusting information from a stranger.
In such a situation, we recommend that you immediately stop talking with the scammer and contact your loved ones, who, according to him, are in trouble, to make sure that everything is in order with the relatives. If their phone is switched off or out of range, contact other family members who may be near them, or report a suspicious call to the police by calling 102. In no case do not transfer money and other material assets to malefactors.
If you have suffered from a crime, then you must immediately contact the nearest territorial unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia or report it to the police at the above phone number.
