Sevastopol police remind bicycle owners about safety measures to protect personal property

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The Sevastopol police note: in clear autumn weather, many Sevastopol residents and city guests enjoy walking on bicycles, electric scooters and other means of personal mobility. Since some lovers of two-wheeled transport do not always monitor the safety of their property, internal affairs bodies periodically register cases of theft of these vehicles.

To prevent such crimes, Sevastopol police remind citizens to take precautions.

To prevent criminals from stealing your two-wheeler, do not leave it unattended on the street or on the landing, even if the entrance door is locked and you are away for a very short time.

If there is still a need to leave, the vehicle should be secured with a special cable with a secure lock. It is recommended to fasten the bicycle by the wheel and frame, and if the cable allows, by both wheels and the frame. In addition to the cable, you can install a bicycle alarm. When leaving a personal mobility device near a bank or supermarket, if possible, place it in the field of view of installed CCTV cameras.

To prevent an attacker from taking possession of your two-wheeled vehicle through deception and abuse of trust, do not hand it over to unfamiliar citizens under the pretext of “riding.”

After purchasing a bicycle or scooter, you should keep the documents for it. In case of theft, they can serve as evidence in a criminal case. It is also recommended to write down its frame number.

If you find a two-wheeled vehicle missing, you must immediately report it to the police by calling 102, describe the characteristics of the stolen property and provide the frame number (if known). Remember that in such situations, every minute is precious to apprehend a criminal without delay. Before the police arrive, it is recommended to take measures to search for possible eyewitnesses of the crime, ask them to describe the intruders and wait for the arrival of law enforcement officers to subsequently testify.

At the same time, for the secret theft of someone else’s property (theft), criminal punishment is provided under Article 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, and responsibility for this unlawful act begins from the age of 14.

We also note that one of the conditions conducive to the commission of property crimes is the purchase of stolen goods by unscrupulous citizens. The acquisition or sale of property known to have been obtained by criminal means entails criminal prosecution in accordance with Article 175 of this Code. If suspicious persons contact you with an offer to purchase something from them at a reduced price, you should refuse such a purchase and inform the police by calling 102.
