Sevastopol police warn: beware of scammers on social networks

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Social networks and instant messengers have become ubiquitous in the lives of most modern people, allowing them to communicate, receive information of interest and make new acquaintances.

However, we should not forget that attackers also keep up with the times and use information and telecommunication technologies for criminal purposes. In one of the recent cases, a 25-year-old local resident contacted the Department of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Leninsky district, having suffered from fraudulent actions of unknown persons. The police found that the criminals had hacked her friend’s page on social networks and, under the guise of a friend, sent the girl a message asking her to urgently borrow money. Thinking that she was helping a friend, the victim transferred more than 17 thousand rubles to an account controlled by the scammers, after which she realized that she had been deceived. Based on this fact, employees of the internal affairs bodies have opened a criminal case under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Fraud” and are taking the necessary measures aimed at identifying and searching for the criminals,” noted the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Sevastopol.

In order to prevent such crimes Sevastopol police reminds, that when you receive emails asking you to transfer money to someone, you should refrain from transferring funds until you are sure who is contacting you. To do this, we recommend contacting the relative or friend from whose page you received the message, and also during the correspondence ask a number of questions, the answers to which only your loved ones know. Remember that following simple precautions will help protect your savings from the actions of remote scammers.

If you have suffered from a crime, you must immediately contact the nearest territorial unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia or call 102.
