Sevastopol police warn citizens about the most common fraudulent schemes

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Cases of remote and contact fraud continue to be registered in Sevastopol. In just one day, the Department of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Leninsky district received 4 statements from citizens who suffered from attackers; the total amount of damage caused to them amounted to more than 429 thousand rubles.

Acting on one of the most common fraudulent schemes — an offer to make a profit by investing, during communication through instant messengers and social networks, the scammers convinced an 18-year-old girl and a 42-year-old woman to transfer 18 thousand rubles and 296 thousand rubles, respectively, to accounts under their control. In another case, posing as an acquaintance of the victim, the criminals used online correspondence to ask a 35-year-old local resident to urgently borrow money. Misled, the victim transferred 15 thousand rubles to the scammers. The desire to buy bed linen from a stranger resulted in property damage for an 85-year-old pensioner. During the day, an elderly woman allowed a fake salesman into her apartment and after he left, she discovered that a large sum of money and jewelry were missing, — said the press service of Sevastopol.

In order to prevent property crimes, Sevastopol police reminds, that promises of quick and easy profit come, as a rule, only from scammers who want to steal your savings. If you receive such a tempting offer, you should immediately interrupt conversation and correspondence with a stranger, avoiding even short-term communication.

If you receive an email from a friend asking you to make a money transfer, we recommend contacting your friend by phone or asking him a series of clarifying questions, the answers to which only your loved ones know.

Explain to elderly family members about the dangers of making any purchases from strangers visiting citizens at their place of residence. Do not allow such strangers into your home. If representatives of utility or social services come to you, ask them to present the appropriate identification, and in case of suspicion, call these organizations and find out whether this employee was sent to you and what the purpose of his visit is.
