Sevastopol police warns again: beware of remote scammers

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The Sevastopol police say: wanting to get rich at someone else’s expense, scammers resort to various tricks aimed at stealing the savings of gullible citizens. Posing as representatives of commercial organizations, attackers place ads with an offer to purchase various things via the Internet, most often at a reduced price.

Wanting to make an online purchase, citizens transfer funds to accounts controlled by scammers, but they never receive the ordered goods. Recently, a 53-year-old local resident suffered from this fraudulent scheme, who, expressing a desire to remotely purchase an engine for a foreign car, sent more than one hundred thousand rubles to the criminals as payment, after which the false seller stopped contacting him.

In order not to suffer from such a fraudulent scheme, Sevastopol police recommend when making online purchases, use services to protect transactions within the platforms. In this case, when paying for the goods, the money is reserved in a safe account until the package is delivered. After confirming the quality of the goods by the buyer, the funds are transferred to the seller. It is recommended to communicate with the prospective seller on the official site, without clicking on external links. In the course of communication, in no case do not provide codes from SMS and CVV code, no matter under what pretext you are asked to do so.

It should be noted that pursuing the goal of illegal profit, scammers also hack pages on social networks of Internet users and, under the guise of relatives or friends, send messages asking them to urgently borrow money. Therefore, when receiving such letters, you should contact the author of the message before transferring money to make sure that it is he who is addressing you. Also, during the correspondence, you can ask a number of clarifying questions, the answers to which only the owner of the account knows.

The fraudulent scheme also remains relevant, when criminals, posing as bank employees or law enforcement officers, make a phone call to a potential victim and report any unauthorized actions with the funds in the account. For example, issuing a loan to you without your knowledge, an attempt to write off funds, and other actions. Fraudsters often know banking and law enforcement terminology, have some information about citizens and can use fake official IDs, as well as call from a communication tool that will be determined as the number of the bank serving you. Most often, they rush the citizen under various pretexts, without giving time to think about their actions and demand that the conversation with them be kept secret. Allegedly to prevent the theft of savings, scammers insist on transferring money to “reserve” or “safe” accounts, require a mobile application to be installed on a smartphone, or ask for confidential bank card details.

If the potential victim follows the instructions of the criminals, then they freely steal his money. In order not to suffer from this type of fraud, in the event of such calls, it is necessary to remain calm and reasonable, not forgetting that real representatives of banks and law enforcement officers never require money transfers to other accounts, installation of mobile applications and are not interested in codes from SMS or CVV codes . Only remote scammers make such demands over the phone. In such a situation, we recommend that you immediately interrupt the conversation with the attacker, and then report a suspicious call to the police by calling 102, and also contact your bank to make sure that everything is in order with your savings.

If you have suffered from a crime, then you must immediately contact the nearest territorial division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia or by the specified phone number.
