SevGU will start training Russian language teachers for schools in Syria
KrymPRESS informs:
The first native Russian speakers already working in the schools of the Syrian Arab Republic (SAR) will come to Sevastopol State University to improve their skills in November. They will become ambassadors of the program for the study of the Russian language in this country, said Irina Avdeeva, vice-rector of the university. In October, during a working trip, representatives of SevGU signed cooperation agreements with four universities of the SAR: Private University of Cordoba (Aleppo province), Private University of Ittihad (Aleppo province), Private Qalamun University (Damascus province), Tartu State University (Tartus city).
During the trip, we also visited the schools of Kalamun and Tartus, and in Tartus — a school for gifted children . The Russian language in Syria has been studied since the seventh grade, there are a lot of applicants, the children are motivated. But in the country’s schools there is not enough methodological support, material and technical base, and so on, because the country has not yet recovered from the war. In addition, there is a problem with the teaching staff: now the Russian language is taught by native speakers — but they are not teachers by education , — the press service of the university quotes Irina Avdeeva.

One of the main difficulties is the psychological state of children. Since the war forced families to constantly move for several years, many children received severe psychological trauma, experienced the loss of loved ones, and did not always have the opportunity to study.
Syria is still experiencing severe social upheaval. And this could not but affect the schools. Now we see that even in regions where there was no war, educational institutions are overcrowded, children of different ages study in the same class. Moreover, these teenagers have experienced a lot of stress, and even now, several years later, their behavior differs from what is typical of schoolchildren in a situation of peace — they are often demotivated, their reactions are more aggressive. In order to help such children to teach such classes in a quality manner, teachers need special training, — says the Vice-Rector.
Russian language courses and pre-university training for schoolchildren. But the question arose of how to implement them, because in such conditions the remote format will not be effective enough.
Organizing a trip for teachers to the Russian Federation is a big problem for Syria — the country is destroyed by the war, there are big problems with financing. But we managed to find a model that we will start implementing with the Syrian side from November: a philanthropist from Syria will pay for the arrival of the first ten native speakers of the Russian language to SevGU, who will undergo in-depth pedagogical training within three months. Upon their return to Syria, they will become our assistants, so that the programs implemented by SevSU take place not in a remote, but in a mixed format, with the possibility of communicating with curators in person , — notes the interlocutor.
In parallel, a Russian language training program for professional teachers and educators will be launched. And in 2023 the first courses for schoolchildren and students will start.
We are interested in attracting schoolchildren to our bachelor’s programs and young people to master’s programs. And the Syrian side is interested in its youth receiving higher competencies. Foreigners can enter the universities of the Russian Federation based on the results of internal university exams. Three modules are supposed: the study of the Russian language, Russian history and the fundamentals of the law of our country, training in Russian in core subjects — those that are needed for admission to the chosen specialty. There are already those who wish, groups are being recruited, and the last organizational issues are being resolved now. This model has been received very positively, and after being tested in Syria, we plan to implement it in neighboring countries: for example, Lebanon, Jordan , — emphasizes Irina Avdeeva.
