SevSU scientists tested a system that allows for express analysis of water quality in the Chernaya River
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Scientists from the Polytechnic Institute of Sevastopol State University have tested a system that allows for an express analysis of water quality in the Chernaya River.
Sevastopol Vodokanal conducts systematic monitoring of water in Chernaya. There is a certain map of samples that he collects and examines in his laboratory. But sometimes there are situations when control needs to be carried out quickly in the field. We can remotely conduct a rapid test on a small number of indicators right on the spot. It does not compare in quality with the laboratory one, but it can show that there is something in the water. In addition, we have the opportunity to fix where exactly these changes were made , — explained the associate professor of the department «Technogenic safety and Metrology» Vyacheslav Lei.
His colleague Vladimir Nikishin provided an automated system for the experiment, which he had previously tested in an unmanned swimming apparatus associated with geo-positioning and analysis of sea water quality. Scientists installed sensors on the device and connected it to the information collection system. The conductometer, which measured the content of salts and oxygen, was provided by the Marine Hydrophysical Institute.
The sensors carried out continuous measurements with reference to coordinates. Samples were taken along km of the river, where it is subjected to the most intense anthropogenic load. 6 points were chosen: near the road and railway bridges in Inkerman, near the villages of Shturmovoe, Khmelnitskoye, in the area of the Chernorechesky aqueduct bridge and near the village of Chernorechye.
We were interested in the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of water — the content of chemical compounds and substances in it. These were samples according to the protocols of the water utility. The experiment showed that the water quality is satisfactory, rather good. For June, the indicators are at a normal level. The activities of the water utility to create sanitary protection zones and the environmental awareness of citizens , have an effect, Lei explained.
The new monitoring method allows to determine the dynamics of changes in water quality in the river. Scientists intend to develop the system in terms of using geopositioning automation tools and expanding the possibilities for analysis. This will allow in the future to form a global monitoring system. In particular, to investigate the concentration of oil products in various reservoirs. SevGU has recently purchased a concentrator necessary for this.
