Strange but true: last year Crimeans changed… their names 1,600 times
CrimeaPRESS reports:
In 2023, 1,618 records of acts of name change were registered in the Republic of Crimea. The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Crimea reported this. The number of these types of civil status acts last year was greater than the number in 2022, when there were 1,365 corresponding state registrations. What were the Crimeans motivated by? Is it really the principle, “whatever you name the yacht, so it will sail”, in the hope of more “successful” and “happy” names? The Ministry of Justice clarified something:
The very definition of state registration of a name change implies a change not only of the first name, but also of the surname or patronymic.
In general, last year, in the relevant applications, citizens continued to indicate the following reasons: the desire to bring personal documents into compliance, to revive the family surname, the desire to bear a premarital surname after a divorce (if, when registering the divorce, citizens remained with their marital surnames), the desire to bear a common surname with the spouse (if, when registering the marriage, they remained with their premarital surnames), as well as the desire to change the surname, first name or patronymic, most often the given name, to a completely new one.
In 2023, citizens most often applied for a name change in August — 187, in September and June — 152 each, in March — 149. Less often — in January — 83, in December — 113, in July — 122. Most records about the change The name was compiled in the Simferopol region, in Simferopol, in Yalta, in Evpatoria, in Kerch and in Bakhchisarai.
