Suddenly and unpleasantly: scammers can hack your device via a Wi-Fi router

CrimeaPRESS reports:

State Duma deputy Anton Nemkin named several signs of a Wi-Fi router being hacked, including a sharp slowdown in the Internet.

Hacking a Wi-Fi router can give scammers access to devices within the local network — this will allow them to take possession of information on a laptop or smartphones connected to the router. Therefore, users need to be very careful about their Wi-Fi routers, since hacking them can really lead to dire consequences, notes Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications. Among them are leaks of user personal data and their sale on the black market, as well as involvement in illegal activities, in particular, DDoS attacks on third-party resources.

The easiest way to detect Wi-Fi hacking is to use an application that allows you to find out how many devices are connected to the network. Using it, the user can see a list of devices that are connected to his Wi-Fi. If you notice some kind of foreign device, this is definitely a reason to be wary and contact specialists,” the deputy noted. For a quick check, you can also turn off all devices, including Smart TV, and look at the router indicator — if it continues to blink, it means there is a connection to third-party gadgets. You can also detect hacked Wi-Fi through the router’s control panel, since there may be third-party devices in the list of DHCP clients.

Another sign of hacked Wi-Fi may be a noticeable decrease in Internet speed, the deputy warns. “The most effective way to get rid of unauthorized users is to change the Wi-Fi password and make it much more difficult than it is. The factory password must be changed, and it is also worth updating the software regularly in order to close any loopholes for fraudsters in a timely manner“, concluded Anton Nemkin.

Previously, Vasily Shutov, a teacher at the department KB-1 “Information Security” of RTU MIREA, warned in a conversation with RT that due to hacking of a Wi-Fi router, the user’s banking data and his correspondence may be at risk, since encryption is performed by the device itself. .

Also, a hacked router allows hackers to conduct a phishing attack on its owner. Thus, the user may open not real, but fake sites, through which criminals can obtain any confidential information about a person.
