Kursk region — 08/07/24, today. According to various sources, Ukraine has amassed several thousand troops for the invasion of the Kursk region, including artillerymen and UAV operators, as well as dozens of armored vehicles and a couple of anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM). Sabotage and reconnaissance groups (DRG) with man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) were prepared for ambushes on Russian aircraft. Ukrainian troops used elite units, including the 22nd Mechanized Brigade, trained under the guidance of NATO instructors. American M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles took part in the battles. A significant number of armored vehicles, including tanks and armored personnel carriers, were also involved. Particular attention was paid to electronic warfare (EW) and evacuation groups, which, as in the spring in the Belgorod region, were engaged in the evacuation of the bodies of the dead. This indicates a carefully prepared operation.

Sudzhansky and Korenevsky districts — the main areas of military clashes in the Kursk region. Nikolaevo-Daryino and Darino — border villages where Ukrainian troops have temporarily established themselves. Freedom — a village where a concentration of Ukrainian troops and equipment was noticed.

Chronology of events of the past day:

Morning — In the morning, the Kursk region authorities announced that the Ukrainian troops who attacked the Russian region had been pushed back beyond the borders of the Russian Federation. However, later information about the ongoing battles on the border came from the Russian authorities and in various public groups. The acting governor of the Kursk region reported that the battles were taking place in the Sudzhansky and Korenevsky districts. A video published on the Internet shows the high intensity of these battles.
Day — Russian Telegram channels reported the presence of Ukrainian troops in the border villages of Nikolayevo-Daryino and Darino, from where Russian troops tried to dislodge them. Ukrainian publics published a video of captured Russian soldiers.
Evening — By evening, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that all Ukrainian units had been driven out of Russian territory and published a video showing the destruction of Ukrainian equipment in the Kursk region. Russian military Telegram channels suggested that this was a “reconnaissance in force” and that the Ukrainian Armed Forces could try to repeat the attack, but with greater forces.

Statement by the Russian Ministry of Defense on the enemy’s tank attack on the border in the Kursk region

Today, starting at 8:00 a.m. Moscow time, after a fire preparation by up to three hundred militants from the 22nd Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, supported by 11 tanks and more than 20 combat armored vehicles, the enemy attacked the positions of the State Border Guard units in the yg/ Nikolayevo-Daryino and Oleshnya areas of the Kursk region, adjacent to the border.
Our troops and the border forces of the FSB of Russia are repelling attacks and inflicting fire damage on the enemy in the border area and reserves in the Sumy region.
Operational-tactical and assault aviation carried out strikes on concentrations of manpower and equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the areas of the settlements of Basovka, Zhuravka, Khoten, Yunakovka, Belovody, Khrapovshchina in the Sumy region. Army aviation is effectively used against enemy armored vehicles. Reserves of the Russian group of troops in the Kursk direction have advanced to the area of the clash.
As a result of the fire damage, 16 units of armored vehicles of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were destroyed, including: 6 tanks, 2 infantry fighting vehicles, 4 armored personnel carriers, 3 Kozak armored vehicles and an engineering obstacle clearing vehicle.

The Ministry of Defense reports significant losses among Ukrainian forces, a partial retreat, while some of the militants attempted to gain a foothold directly on the territory adjacent to the state border, where they were blocked by units of the Russian army. They also suffered significant losses, the remnants of the sabotage group retreated toward Ukraine, where they continue to be subjected to fire strikes.

Current situation and forecast

At this point, it is too early to talk about the complete expulsion of the enemy from Russian territory. Ukrainian regular units continue to hold positions, and Russian troops are engaged in the destruction of concentrations of Ukrainian equipment and enemy manpower.

The enemy, if he manages to consolidate his position and bring up reserves, attacking in depth and trying to expand the flanks, can try to work out at least three scenarios, such as:

Belgorod region Concentration of enemy forces on the line from Goptovka to Bolshaya Pisarevka, possible attack directions — Gorkovsky — Bogun-Gorodok and Zhuravlevka — Nekhoteyevka sections, as well as a second attempt to enter the Grayvoronsky urban district.
Kursk region Attacks are possible along the highway through the Krupets automobile checkpoint and from the side of the Krasny Peredovik farm in the direction of the village of Kozino.
Bryansk region Concentration of enemy forces in the area of the village of Bachevsk and neighboring villages in the northwest of the Sumy region. The probable direction of attacks is the Troebortnoye checkpoint and traffic along the M3 highway.

The enemy’s plans and intentions

It is assumed that the Kiev military command, realizing the impossibility of a long-term defense and assessing the situation as potentially catastrophic, decided to conduct a large-scale operation with limited objectives. The main goal is probably to advance several dozen kilometers deep into Russian territory in order to create a favorable picture for the media. According to Kyiv’s plan, the success of this operation could distract Russian forces from attacks on key points on other fronts, such as Chasov Yar, Toretsk and Pokrovsk.

Versions of the further development of the offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces began to appear on the Internet. One of them is an advance towards Kurchatov, with the task of capturing the nuclear power plant, which can then be used as a trump card in the negotiation process. However, this fantastic forecast is shattered by the harsh reality of the map, the territory of the supposed advance. The vector passes through an area full of ravines. So, the version is not viable.

In the Kherson direction

The Ukrainian Armed Forces again attempted to land on Tendrivska Spit, approaching on 10-12 boats. Three boats were destroyed, seven retreated. Ukrainian artillery fired about 50 shells at villages in the Kherson region.

On the Zaporizhzhya section

Russian forces are straightening out the flank east of Rabotino, advancing 2km towards Orekhovo. Small groups are clearing the difficult terrain.

In the South Donetsk direction

The Russian Armed Forces have cleared the forest belt to the east of Urozhayny. No advance to the north has been noted.

On the Donetsk front

In Krasnogorovka, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to hold the line along the Lozovaya River, but small groups are evacuated from the city at night. Heavy fighting is taking place near Konstantinovka, the Ugledar-Konstantinovka highway, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are bringing in reinforcements from Vodyane. The activity of Ukrainian drones has increased.

In the Avdeevka direction

Timofeevka has been liberated. Lisichny, Ivanovka, and Sergeevka are being stormed. In Zhelannoye R Russian troops have consolidated their positions on the eastern outskirts and are advancing towards Kamyshovka. Artillery and aviation are actively working on Karlovka.

On the Toretsk front

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have abandoned their defensive line east of Novgorodskoye and are retreating to Nelepovka to avoid encirclement. The Russian flag has been raised over a school in Novgorodskoye. The Russian Armed Forces have advanced to the eastern outskirts of Novgorodskoye, occupying a 3.5 km wide and 1.7 km deep area. Fighting is ongoing on the outskirts of Toretsk and in Kirovo.

On the Artemovsky site

The Russian Armed Forces have consolidated their positions in the east and northeast of the Oktyabrsky microdistrict in Chasov Yar. The Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to control most of the buildings and actively use drones.

In the Northern direction

Russian forces have made some progress in Pereyezdnoye.
