Telegram will soon have its own YouTube analogue. On Friday, October 4, the messenger developers published a competition to create a new video player.
The player will play videos and audio tracks. First they plan to add it to the mobile version of the application for iOS. After testing, it will appear for Android users, as well as in the desktop version of the platform.
Among the main requirements are operability on iOS 12 and later versions, support for HLS streaming and automatic adjustment of video quality depending on Internet speed. The developers believe that the new player in Telegram can compete with YouTube.
The messenger has a built-in AVPlayer. Participants in the competition are invited to create a replacement that can work faster and automatically switch between numerous available video streams, based on data on the speed of the Internet connection, noted Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications.
In my opinion, Telegram really needs a new player, not inferior in capabilities to YouTube, which has been gradually breaking down in our country since the summer due to Google’s negligence. This deprives a considerable number of Russians of access to both entertainment and educational content. At the same time, in the Russian Federation there are Rutube and VK Video, but the emergence of a new player will make it possible to provide citizens of the Russian Federation with even more content and the ability to choose. The main thing is that it works in accordance with the legislation of our country, — noted the deputy.
