That's right, spring! The deer of the Simferopol Zoo has shed its antlers
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Every spring, the deer Stepan, who lives in the zoo corner of the Children’s Park in Simferopol, sheds his branched antlers, which he has been growing for a whole year.
As experts from the Capital Parks enterprise said, the size of a deer’s antlers depends entirely on its health and nutrition. Big antlers mean the deer is in great shape and has been eating well all season. In most species of deer, antlers serve only one purpose: to attract a mate during the breeding season and to be able to participate in tournaments for her.
After shedding, the deer begins to grow new antlers. At first they are young, soft and covered with fluff. Later, the fluff disappears, the bone tissue begins to harden and turns into a source of pride for the deer.
You can visit the hornless (for now) Stepan in the zoo corner of the Children’s Park in Simferopol. One BUT! The zoo is open every day, without days off or breaks, from 9:00 to 18:30, however, every first Tuesday of the month is a sanitary day at the zoo (accordingly, such a sanitary day is March 5).
