The 70th anniversary of the anthem “Legendary Sevastopol” is celebrated in Sevastopol

On October 17, Sevastopol will celebrate the 70th anniversary of its anthem “Legendary Sevastopol”. This day was officially established by the city Legislative Assembly in December 2015.

The anthem will be played on the city system throughout the day. Leading TV channels and radio stations in Sevastopol invite everyone to unite in a flash mob: the anthem will be played on regional channels and radio at 9:00, 11:00, 15:00 and 21:00. At the central city ring and in the area of ​​the May 1st Square in Balaklava, the anthem will sound at 10:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 18:00, uniting Sevastopol residents at this significant moment.

“Legendary Sevastopol” was written by composer Vano Muradeli to the words of poet Pyotr Gradov in 1954. The anthem was created at the request of Black Sea sailors in honor of the upcoming celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first heroic defense of the city in 1854–1855 and the 10th anniversary of the liberation of Sevastopol from the Nazi invaders. The first mass performance of the anthem took place on October 17, 1954 at the Black Sea Fleet stadium, where more than five thousand people sang it, and since then it has become the musical calling card of the city.

Due to the special security regime, it is currently impossible to restore the mass performance of the anthem, as it was 70 years ago. However, on the anniversary day, the entire city will be able to join in the memorable event, singing the anthem simultaneously from various points in Sevastopol.
