The Main Investigation Department of the Russian Investigative Committee for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol has opened a criminal case against a 53-year-old resident of Kerch. He is charged with organizing the activities of a religious organization, in respect of which the court made a decision to liquidate or ban its activities that has entered into legal force in connection with the implementation of extremist activities (Part 1 of Article 282.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
In 2017, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation decided to liquidate the organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses and its regional branches in connection with extremist activities. At the same time, a resident of Kerch, who was a member of the highest governing body of the regional cell of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Kerch (prohibited extremist organization — ed.)continued to ensure its vigorous activities. The man coordinated meetings of adherents, where the ideas of a banned religious organization were promoted.
The illegal activities of the defendant were identified and suppressed by operational officers of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol and the Department for Economic Security and Combating of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Crimea, with the force support of the OMON of the Russian Guard.— reported in Sledkom.
The suspect is currently detained. The investigator for especially important cases charged him with committing the above crime. During searches at the defendant’s place of residence and meetings, prohibited literature and other illegal materials were confiscated. The issue of choosing a preventive measure for the accused will be decided in the near future.
The involvement of other persons in extremist activities and organizing the activities of the Kerch cell of the banned organization “Jehovah’s Witnesses” is established.
