The archaeological season has started in the museum-reserve «Sudak fortress»
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The Sudak Fortress Museum-Reserve has launched the summer season of archaeological excavations conducted under the guidance of Vitaly Zakharov, a senior researcher at the museum.
The object of a comprehensive study of specialists was a site on one of the hiking trails of the fortress near the object of cultural heritage of regional significance «Curtain IV between Tower No. 4 Georgievskaya and Tower No. 5 Donjon, XIV-XV centuries», located on the territory of the upper tier of the defense of the fortress. Fragments of human remains were found here, after which the place was promptly fenced off and security excavations of the site began.— reported the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Crimea.
In the course of ongoing research, two skeletons were found that were not in anatomical order. One of them, presumably, belonged to a teenager, while the other belonged to an adult. Associated finds include weakly expressed lifting material: fragments of a bracelet made of blue glass, beads made of Egyptian paste, and carnelian thread. Their small composition may indicate that this burial was plundered in ancient times.
The discovered burial, presumably, is part of the necropolis, which was located in the eastern part of the citadel of the fortress even before its construction by the Genoese. From the excavations of previous years, it is known that Curtain IV overlaps this necropolis, and the found burial place is located just not far from the walls of the curtain on the outside.experts say.
The found bone remains were removed from the ground and will be sent for anthropological examination, which will help to establish their gender and age, as well as, possibly, the social status and gastronomic preferences of the buried.
