The architectural and artistic council of Sevastopol approved a project for the improvement of the central part of the city

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On October 6, the architectural and artistic council, chaired by the city governor Mikhail Razvozhaev, approved a project for the improvement of public spaces: Lenin Street, Nakhimov Square and Nakhimov Avenue. The concept was developed by the Moscow architectural bureau Wowhaus. As the head of the city noted, the team is already known in Sevastopol for major projects — the reconstruction of Bolshaya Morskaya and the creation of the Uchkuevka park. According to the head of the project team, Ivan Krasheninnikov, the main idea is to organize a single public pedestrian space on Lenin Street, Nakhimov Avenue and Nakhimov Square, preserve the architectural appearance of the central part of the city, and restore the valuable historical qualities of the territory. Together with the government of Sevastopol, transport and pedestrian flows were studied, and the analysis formed the basis for an updated transport scheme. Pedestrian traffic will be given priority. The concept was implemented taking into account the requirements for ensuring access for people with limited mobility to all functional facilities.

On Lenin Street and Nakhimov Avenue, sidewalks will be improved, paving will be replaced, small architectural forms will be placed, and trees will be planted to restore the protected green framework. The project also involves landscaping the square next to the Maritime Library, the square opposite the Sinop Stairs, Suvorov Square, as well as the area near the honor board on Lenin Street. In all cases, we completely preserve the historical and architectural axes — the concept is to form a single public space convenient for everyone,” the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes Ivan Krasheninnikov.

Nakhimov Square, according to the authors’ plan, will become completely pedestrian; only emergency services and service vehicles will be able to enter here. It is planned that the territory will become a “front” square; concerts and other public events will traditionally be held here, and there will also be recreation areas on the square. The developers proposed updating the paving of the square, emphasizing the monument to Admiral Nakhimov with a drawing.

The governor noted that the project has a number of nuances that will need to be discussed by the government of Sevastopol and relevant specialists. These include a review of the transport network, issues of lighting, landscaping, and the organization of video surveillance in the landscaped area.

The project is colossal and significant for Sevastopol; its implementation will take more than one year and, of course, each stage will undergo multi-level analysis. As for the material side of the issue, here we will definitely need Moscow’s help: in order to realize everything planned, colossal investments will be requirednotes Mikhail Razvozhaev.

Another project approved by the architectural and artistic council was the concept of the planning organization of the square near the Peter and Paul Cathedral. It was presented by Sevastopol architect Elina Krasilnikova.

My colleagues and I conducted an analysis of public opinion and relied on it when working on the project. Our main task was to create a concept for landscaping that was co-scaled and subordinate to the architecture of the cathedral, in tune with it, emphasizing its featuressays the architect.

The project involves paving the area with natural stone, arranging recreation areas — placing park sofas with comfortable seats and backs, as well as thoughtful landscaping of the area. According to Elina Krasilnikova, the selection of plants that will decorate the green zone was carried out jointly with Sevastopol dendrologists.

The square near the Peter and Paul Cathedral is a place that requires exceptionally delicate and careful reconstruction. There shouldn’t be any unnecessary functionality here; this is a classic square in the city center. Therefore, it is wonderful that the concept was developed in the best traditions of Sevastopol architecturenotes Mikhail Razvozhaev.

Members of the architectural and artistic council raised the issue of repairing the retaining walls surrounding the square. This topic will be discussed separately.
