The centenary of national gliding will be celebrated in Feodosia

July 15 at the Museum of Free Flight. K. K. Artseulov in Feodosia will open the exhibition “11 legendary rallies. Pages of History”, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of national gliding. According to Tourist portal of Crimeathe exposition will tell about how this type of aviation sport was born, about the achievements of science in flight, as well as offer to take a thematic quiz and give prizes.

As noted in the museum, the beginning of the mass development of gliding is considered the I All-Union glider tests, held in November 1923 on Mount Uzun-Syrt (since 1924 — Mount Klementyev) near Koktebel. During these tests, Soviet glider pilots made their first flights on vehicles of their own design. The winner was the A-5 glider by Konstantin Artseulov, on which the country’s first soaring glider pilot, military pilot Leonid Jungmeister, made soaring flights.

The flights of 1923 showed the availability of mastering soaring flights and marked the beginning of glider competitions, which began to take place regularly on Mount Klementyev. The organizers, participants in the tests and competitions of glider pilots were in the future well-known pilots, aircraft designers, creators of space technology Konstantin Artseulov, Sergei Ilyushin, Oleg Antonov, Sergei Korolev, Mikhail Tikhonravov, Alexander Yakovlev.

Before the war, from 1923 to 1935, 11 rallies took place on Mount Klementyev, where new gliders were tested, and all-Union and world records were set. The exhibition will tell about these legendary gatherings— told the museum.

Visitors will be able to see models of gliders of participants in pre-war rallies, photo documents and much more. The meeting will be attended by military pilots, who can ask questions.

In addition, a quiz will be held for the guests of the exhibition with questions about the history of gliding and Mount Klementyev, the basics of aerodynamics. For the correct answers, the participants will receive gifts from the museum, and the winner will be able to practice hang-glider control on a special simulator.
