The courier of remote scammers who stole money from Sevastopol pensioners was sentenced to 4 years of forced labor
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Having agreed with the position of the state prosecutor of the prosecutor’s office of the Gagarinsky district of Sevastopol, the court issued a guilty verdict against a previously convicted 40-year-old local resident.
He was found guilty of committing five crimes under Part 2 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud causing significant damage to a citizen).
The court hearing established that the man, in order to make easy and quick money, entered into a conspiracy with scammers who called elderly people on the phone and gave them false information that their loved ones had caused road accidents. Under this pretext, they were offered to transfer money to help their relatives. After that, a courier came to the pensioners and took their money. He transferred part of the amounts received to his accomplices, and kept part for himself as a reward. Thus, in the period from May 9 to May 11, 2024, the man took possession of the money of five residents of Sevastopol aged 68 to 83 years for a total amount of almost 800 thousand rubles. Police officers stopped the illegal activities of the attacker and detained him immediately after committing another crime on May 11— reported the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Crimea.
The Gagarinsky District Court of Sevastopol, taking into account the opinion of the state prosecutor, the circumstances of the crimes and the identity of the perpetrator, sentenced him to 4 years of forced labor. He must serve his sentence in a specialized center under the supervision of a convoy.
In addition, the court satisfied the prosecutor’s claims to recover from the convicted person in favor of the elderly victims material damage and compensation for moral damage caused by the crimes, totaling almost 1.1 million rubles.
