The Department of Neurosurgery of the Regional Vascular Center of Sevastopol celebrates its 50th anniversary

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The history of the neurosurgery department of the Regional Vascular Center of City Hospital No. 1 began back in 1973. At that time, there were two doctors working there, and the department had 30 beds. Now 12 specialists provide daily routine and emergency assistance here, and a total of 38 people work here.

The importance of such a branch in Sevastopol is difficult to overestimate. This is important emergency care for people with certain types of pathologies, and our doctors heroically protect the lives of Sevastopol residents by working in this department. This is a very difficult direction. I know that science has not yet fully revealed all the secrets of the human nervous system, so doctors practice art, and they do it very well— the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes the Deputy Governor of Sevastopol Alexander Kulagin.

The department performs about 400 operations a year, most of which are planned. Every day, neurosurgeons continue to push the boundaries of what is possible to save lives. Over the past year alone, about 1,200 patients have been discharged from here.

The department’s specialists operate on all parts of the central and peripheral nervous systems and on the spine. Emergency care is provided for injuries to the central nervous system and acute vascular accidents in the brain. Most of the neurosurgery techniques existing in the world are used by specialists of the departmentsays the head of the neurosurgery department Oleg Malyshev.

In 2016, the department introduced fundamentally new surgical techniques: endoscopic removal of stroke hematomas, invasive measurement of intracranial pressure, caratoid enderterectomy, ventriculoperitoneal shunting for normal pressure hydrocephalus, endoscopic assistance for microdiscectomy.

We are fully equipped to provide neurosurgical care, but we still strive forward, because the better the equipment, the more accurately we perform our work. Our main goal is to provide specialized assistance to city residents. The department’s doctors quickly adopt the experience of leading federal neurosurgery centers to implement in our work,” emphasizes Oleg Malyshev.
