The eighth international conference on the relationship between Crimea and the Mediterranean is held in Chersonesos

The conference was organized by the Chersonese Tauride Museum-Reserve, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Sevastopol State University as part of the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Today, the country’s leading experts in the field of history, political science, sociology and archeology gathered at its opening.
I am infinitely pleased that the conference in Chersonesus brought together so many representatives of the spheres of education, science and culture! I am glad that museum work and science unite us all, that the discoveries we have made allow us to gather here for the eighth time! This conference is important not only for Chersonese and Sevastopol, but also for science in general. I am sure that its participants will expect productive discussions, diverse reports and excellent results! — noted the director of the museum-reserve E. A. Morozova in her welcoming speech.
Deputy Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Historical Sciences N. G. Romanova also drew the attention of those gathered to the significance of holding this scientific forum in Chersonesos. She thanked the management of the cultural institution for their support and many years of fruitful cooperation.
During the conference, scientists will read reports on the political, trade and cultural relations of Crimea with the Mediterranean region and the countries of the East in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Modern times. Forum participants will discuss issues of historiography and cartography of the Black Sea and Mediterranean waters, the latest research in the field of archaeology, numismatics and epigraphy of the peninsula, as well as interethnic and political relations of the peoples of Crimea in the past and present.
In addition, on June 6, a round table dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War will be held in Chersonesos. Scientists will consider the influence of German foreign policy on the beginning and course of hostilities, the role of participating officers in the life of the Black Sea Fleet and a number of other issues.
The international scientific conference “Historical, cultural, interethnic, religious and political connections of Crimea with the Mediterranean region and the countries of the East” will last at the museum-reserve until June 8.
