The ex-governor of Sevastopol Ovsyannikov is afraid not of the London court, but of the “Russian special services”
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The Royal Court of the Southerk District rejected the defense arguments of the ex-governor of Sevastopol (2016-2019) and former deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Ovsyannikov, who was detained in the UK, that his life may be in danger due to the activities of the Russian special services. The correspondent reports this TASS from the courtroom where preliminary hearings were held in the case of Ovsyannikov, accused of violating the sanctions regime.
You claim that there is a threat, but I do not see a risk in the fact that information about his place of residence will be in the public domain. You haven’t provided supporting evidencesaid Judge Tony Baumgartner.
He noted that if such evidence emerged, the accused would be placed under arrest for his own safety. During the court hearing, it became known that the former Russian official lives in the Lambeth area of south London.
Thus, the judge rejected the request of Ovsyannikov’s lawyer Toby Cadman. He asked the court not to publicly disclose details of Ovsyannikov’s place of residence in the UK, on the basis of Articles 2 (Right to Life) and 8 (Right to Respect for Private and Family Life) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The next court hearing in this case will take place on March 19.
