The governor of Sevastopol spoke about the improvement of the Memorial at Cape Crystal
CrimeaPRESS reports:
At Cape Khrustalny, the restoration of the memorial to the Heroic Defenders of Sevastopol in 1941-1942 and the improvement of the surrounding area are being completed. About this reported Governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev.
Construction of the sculptural composition began back in 1981; 5 years later, due to lack of funding, this work was suspended, and in 1990, the almost finished composition was to be demolished. And only at the beginning of the 2000s, by the forces of military builders of the Black Sea Fleet, the construction of the monument was completed. Since that time, comprehensive work to preserve “Soldier and Sailor” has not been carried out; the granite pedestal has fallen into disrepair, its tiles have fallen off, and cracks have appeared. The sculpture itself consisted of already oxidized sheets of copper from different alloys.
Restoration of the memorial began on my instructions in February of this year. By Victory Day, the pedestal of the eternal flame had already been restored and new gas equipment had been installed so that the flame would not go out even in strong winds.said Razvozhaev.
During the restoration, specialists completely cleaned the interior of the sculptures, painted and treated it with anti-corrosion compounds, carried out work on the restoration of copper sheets: they were cleaned of traces of corrosion, replaced deformed sheets and coated with a special preservative composition.
One of the most difficult stages in working on the sculptures was chemical patination — applying a special composition to the copper surface to fix one shade. Thanks to this technique, the color of the sculptures will be long lasting. Specialists also repaired all reinforced concrete and metal structures inside and outside the sculpture’s pedestal, cleaned the walls of destructive plaster, carried out anti-corrosion treatment and completely replaced the cladding.
The observation deck at the monument used to partially consist of paving slabs. It was completely restored in granite. Now specialists are finishing the landscaping of the park area behind the sculptural composition: they are carrying out landscaping work and commissioning work on lighting and video surveillance; trash bins and benches will soon be installed here— the head of the city clarified.
Architectural lighting is installed around the sculpture, and the observation deck is also entirely illuminated by a system of recessed lamps.
