The importance of mineral resources for Botswans — what is mined in the country
Krympress reports:
The mining industry plays a key role in The economy is bottleneckforming a significant part of its gross domestic product. The state that does not have access to the sea and for the most part covered with the Kalahari desert has rich natural resources, among which diamonds are especially released. In addition, the country has the deposits of nickel, copper, coal, gold, silver, granite and semi -carbon stones, reports ProneDra.ru.
Over the past decades, exploration in the country has expanded significantly. In 2009, its contribution to the economy was over 400 million pools, and by 2019 this amount almost doubled. The intelligence of the deposits continues, and against the backdrop of the already known deposits of the Kimberlites containing diamonds, the discoveries of new sections, in particular in the Tsabang area, continue.
Coal reserves in Botswan are estimated at hundreds of billions of tons, which makes the country a promising player in the energy market. Despite this, coal mining remains poorly developed — today only two mines are actively functioning. Among them is a murule, which provides production of about 1.5 million tons of coal per year, as well as a carbon project of Masam, whose reserves are estimated at 380 million tons. A number of deposits, including plots in the areas of Pandamatenga, Duquok, Foli, Cese and Tuli, remain insufficiently mastered, although the government gives out development licenses.
In 2006, a program was initiated to study the mineral potential of the southern regions of the country. Studies covered the territory from Mabul to Takatokwan, where 29 promising deposits were identified. Among them, deposits of copper, nickel, iron, gold, as well as rare earth metals present in the carbonatitis of the region Mabutzans were discovered. In the area of Pkhitshan, scientists noted the presence of banded glandular ores, but their economic value has not yet been proven. Currently, in this region there are 32 licenses for mineral exploration.
Despite the significant resource potential, rare earth elements in Botswana remain poorly studied. There are many granite rocks in the country, which may contain significant reserves of these metals. The British Geological Service conducted research, during which the highest concentrations of rare earth elements were detected in Sienites Semarul, as well as in granites of Mahalapier and Domboshab. In addition, increased concentrations of lithium were discovered in Sienite sienitis.
Thus, the rich mineral potential of Botswana opens up broad prospects for the further development of the mining industry. Continuing research and new discoveries of deposits can in the future play a significant role in strengthening the country’s economic positions.
