At the Sudak Fortress Museum-Reserve, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Crimea, the X International Numismatic Symposium “Pontian Money Changer: Money of the Local Market” was held. The conference was organized by the Institute of Archeology of Crimea of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Research Center for the History and Archeology of Crimea of the Crimean Federal University named after V.I. Vernadsky, Museum-Reserve «Sudak Fortress».
During the symposium, scientific discoveries of leading numismatists from Crimea, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Krasnodar, Rostov-on-Don, Novorossiysk and Nikolaev were presented.
As part of sessional presentations and lively discussions, issues were discussed on a wide range of problems of monetary circulation in the Black Sea region from antiquity and the Middle Ages to modern times and modern history, including materials from related historical disciplines: archaeology, epigraphy, sphragistics, bonistics and interdisciplinary studies— said the Republican Ministry of Culture.
Each presentation was accompanied by a ceremonial presentation to the speakers of a commemorative token from the series “Rarities of the Museum of the History of Money,” specially minted at the St. Petersburg Mint, a branch of JSC Goznak. According to tradition, a collection of scientific articles was published at the beginning of the symposium.
The X International Numismatic Symposium “Pontian Money Changer: Local Market Money” became a unique and fruitful event. Professional connections were created and strengthened, and new opportunities for further research opened up. A serious result was the expansion of knowledge, increased understanding and confirmation of the need to continue research into the numismatic heritage of the Black Sea region in order to preserve the invaluable historical and cultural heritage,” the organizers summed up.
