The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation warns about fraudsters
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation (IC RF) has warned that fake pages of the agency are being distributed on the Internet, the purpose of which is to steal money from Russians.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has identified a fake website that mimics the department’s official website. The fake resource offers assistance to participants in a special military operation and their family members in receiving payments established by law.
In order to apply for benefits, the scammers ask to leave personal information. Then the fraudsters contact the victims by phone and inform them of the need to transfer funds allegedly for needs related to the execution of the request for a preferential payment.
Phishing resources are often created for a specific group of the population, noted Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications. “At the same time, such attacks are personalized. Fraudsters initially select a target group and create content for it. For example, when the state allocated one-time assistance to families with children during the pandemic, hundreds of phishing resources mimicking the State Services portal immediately appeared on the Internet. Therefore, the attention of attackers to the topic of SVO is not surprising, – the deputy said.
According to Nemkin, the problem of phishing remains acute.
In the first half of the year, Yandex Browser identified more than 200 thousand phishing resources, and Roskomnadzor blocked about 34 thousand fake sites, the Ministry of Digital Development’s Anti-Phishing system – about 64 thousand. At the same time, when blocking, attackers immediately create new pages, and recently – including in foreign domain zones, which is why it is not always easy to identify a site as malicious.– the deputy notes.
According to Nemkin, automated anti-phishing mechanisms should be considered only as an additional tool for solving the problem.
Even the most effective system will operate with a time lag. It will take time to detect phishing sites and block them in any case. The solution to the problem largely depends on the digital literacy skills of our citizens– the deputy believes.
Nemkin reminded that one must always be careful about the content published on the Internet.
Especially to information about any benefits, cash payments, messages about winning a competition or promises of high wages. Most often, this is how fraudulent resources attract the user’s attention. In addition, you should be critical of the links posted on such resources. If a web page «redirects» you to the site of a bank or the «Gosuslugi» portal, then carefully check the domain name. Fraudsters try to create a complete copy of official resources, but the domain name will still differ by at least one letter, – the deputy concluded.
