The lithium race is gaining momentum, Russia relies on strategic metal

Krympress reports:

Litius, the lightest metal on Earth, becomes the object of the global race for resources. Its unique properties make it indispensable in the production of batteries, electronics, aviation alloys and even medicines. Countries with a developed industry consider lithium as a strategic resource that can ensure energy independence, and Russia does not stand aside.

Since 2000, the world production of lithium has increased by more than 14 times, reaching 440 thousand tons in 2023. The lion’s share of the extracted raw materials goes to the production of batteries for electric vehicles and energy drives. Australia, Chile, Argentina and China remain prey leaders, but the redistribution of the world market continues. Russia, having significant explored reserves, is preparing to resume its own production, reports a specialized publication pronedra.ru.

Despite the fact that in the country the lithium has not been obtained for several decades, the state balance takes into account about 3.5 million tons of Li₂o. The main deposits are concentrated in the Murmansk region, the Irkutsk region, Transbaikalia, Tovy and Primorye. Soviet exploration projects require revaluation and new investments, but interest in domestic resources has sharply increased against the background of international sanctions and an import substitution course.

The largest deposit of Russia is Kolmozerskoye (Murmansk region), whose stocks exceed 800 thousand tons of Li₂o with an average content of 1.13%. In 2023, the Polyarny Litius company received a license for its development, and the beginning of industrial production was scheduled for 2030. Alternative sources of lithium, including the oil and gas fields of Eastern Siberia (Yaractinskoye, Kovyktinskoye), where metal can be extracted from brine during hydrocarbons, are considered.

Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Andrei Tkachev (GGM RAS) emphasizes:

Lithium has a unique combination of lightness and high energy intensity, which makes it indispensable for batteries and energy -toacling systems. It is this property that turns lithiums into the key to energy independence: it allows you to move from fossil fuel sources to renewable energy, maintaining the stability and reliability of energy supply.

In the context of the rapid development of technology and growing demand for lithium, Russia has every chance to take a worthy place in the world market. Returning to one’s own prey will not only reduce dependence on imports, but also create new high -tech production that can compete at the global level.
