The Mikhailovsky Theater completed its tour in Tauric Chersonese
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The museum-reserve hosted the final performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Nacho Duato. The troupe of the Mikhailovsky Theater gave five performances of the performance from August 3 to 7 within the framework of the VI International Festival of Opera and Ballet «Chersonese».
Shakespeare’s heroes first appeared on the Russian ballet stage in 1940 — in the performance of the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater named after S. M. Kirov (Mariinsky), where Galina Ulanova shone in the image of Juliet, who bewitched the whole world. In December at the Mikhailovsky Theater, the famous Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato presented to the St. Petersburg public his own version of Romeo and Juliet, because he was sure: “the score Sergei Prokofiev is the most amazing thing that has ever been created for the ballet stage.” Together with the choreographer, a team of high-class specialists worked on the production: stage designer Jaffar Chalabi, lighting designer Brad Fields and costume designer Angelina Atlagich , — the press service of the Tauric Chersonese Museum-Reserve notes.
Almost ten years later, in August 2022 of the year, the famous performance was seen by residents and guests of Sevastopol at the VI International Festival of Opera and Ballet «Chersonese». For five evenings, the guests of the festival watched the vicissitudes of the plot of Shakespeare’s tragedy, enjoyed the art of ballet and the amazing music of Sergei Prokofiev. This sensual and incredibly beautiful performance did not leave any spectator indifferent.
I was at the ballet for the first time. Getting to a performance of this level right away is a great success and the most correct decision. Now I know that ballet is strong, beautiful and very sincere. The artistry is amazing! The scenery, light and, of course, the atmosphere of Chersonesus — all this creates an indescribable feeling that I am a participant in those events in medieval Verona. I am strongly impressed! – Ekaterina said after the show.
«Romeo and Juliet» staged by the Mikhailovsky Theater is worth seeing for everyone who loves ballet. Not only for the amazing music of Prokofiev and the well-known «Dance of the Knights», but also to appreciate the magnificent choreography, amazing costumes and unusual scenery of the performance. Each opera and ballet festival in Chersonese is a real holiday! – noted Tatyana, a visitor to the event.
At the screenings of «Romeo and Juliet» in the museum-reserve, the hall was invariably full, the audience did not let the artists go for a long time!
The Khersones International Opera and Ballet Festival is a landmark event in the cultural life of Sevastopol, which has become one of its hallmarks. Every year the best artists of the country participate in the event. The festival gathers thousands of guests. They are invariably attracted by the impressive antique and medieval appearance of the ancient city, as well as the opportunity to enjoy great classical works performed by recognized masters of the Russian and world stage.
The organizers of the VI International Festival of Opera and Ballet «Chersonese» were ANO «Russian Seasons» in cooperation with LLC «Vision Media Center» and the museum-reserve «Tauric Chersonesos». The event was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Government of Sevastopol and the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
On August 7, the first tour of the Mikhailovsky Theater in Crimea ended, but the memories of the ballet Romeo and Juliet choreographed by Nacho Duato will live on in the hearts of grateful spectators for a long time to come. See you soon at the Khersones International Opera and Ballet Festival!
