The Nikitsky Botanical Garden received the status of a botanical garden of federal significance

The government approved a decision on the creation of a federal botanical garden in the Crimea. The Nikitsky Botanical Garden in the vicinity of Yalta received the status of a botanical garden of federal significance. Decree on this signed— the message says.
According to the government, the created specially protected natural area will be under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education and Science. In addition, the federal status will ensure the regime of special protection and create conditions for organizing research and the development of the potential of one of the oldest scientific centers in Russia.
It is noted that more than 17 thousand species of plants, including southern fruit crops, decorative trees, and medicinal plants, were collected on the territory of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. There are also territories and facilities with a unique natural landscape and monuments of garden art. The total area of the botanical garden, including plots in the territory of the city district of Alushta, as well as Simferopol and Dzhankoy districts, is almost 885 hectares.
As indicated in the government, the Nikitsky Botanical Garden was founded in 1811 as a state -owned economic garden for the development of Crimea and creating profitable branches of agriculture in the south of Russia. In the fall of 1812, the first trees were planted there. In the Soviet years, scientists who worked in this garden brought more than 100 varieties of peach, apricot, cherries, cherry plums, plums, almonds, figs, grenade, walnut and other plants.
