The results of underwater research by scientists were presented in Khersones
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On November 3, the exhibition “Digital Technologies and Underwater Archeology” opens in the small hall of the Byzantine exposition, where you can learn about the results of modern research by specialists from the Tauric Chersonese Museum-Reserve, Sevastopol State University and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The life of people, starting from the earliest eras, was closely connected with the development and conquest of the sea. Already in ancient times, the bulk of freight and passenger traffic was carried out by sea: such routes connected the Indian and Atlantic oceans through the Mediterranean. Under water are the skeletons of ships, objects of material culture sacrificed to the gods, crossings and places of historical battles, settlements and port buildings, as well as various hydraulic structures. Without taking into account the monuments located on the seabed, knowledge of ancient and modern history would be incomplete. Underwater archaeological research allows specialists to study these cultural heritage sites and supplement the available facts with relevant data , the press service of the museum-reserve reported.
At the new exhibition in Chersonese Tauride, one will be able to learn about the results of scientific research carried out by the staff of the museum-reserve, Sevastopol State University and the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, off the coast of Crimea and the Republic of Abkhazia in the Black Sea, as well as in the waters of the Syrian Arab Republic in the Mediterranean Sea.
The visitors of the new temporary exhibition will be told about the history of studying the unique medieval ships that sank near Balaklava during the Byzantine Empire, in the 11th-12th centuries. They will also be able to learn about the results of a study of the fortifications of Chersonese in the Quarantine Bay and about the work of the international Syrian-Russian expedition off the coast of the legendary Phoenician island of Arvad and the city of Tartus in the Syrian Arab Republic.
At the exhibition, new extensive scientific material is summarized in video presentations. They will allow to demonstrate three-dimensional models of the studied objects of underwater archeology and photographs documenting the process of research work in a modern multimedia format. The exposition is complemented by authentic items recovered from the seabed during expeditions.
We invite everyone from November 3 to December 4 2022 to visit the new exhibition of the museum-reserve to get acquainted with the unique finds of archaeologists in the Black Sea and in the waters of the Syrian Arab Republic , — the press service of the museum-reserve «Tauric Chersonesos» notes.
