The Russian Orthodox Church called for giving up social networks during Lent
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Believers should stop using social networks and blogs during Lent if they feel dependent on them. This advice was provided by Vakhtang Kipshidze, Deputy Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate. This is reported by TASS.
A representative of the Russian Orthodox Church noted that during Lent, every believer must determine what is most difficult for him to give up, that “for him it is the biggest thorn in his life, which he must somehow try to get out during fasting«.
There are probably people who are much more attached to consuming entertainment content on social networks than our predecessors were to food. That is, we know people who, unfortunately, become computer dependent, who never feel like eating at all; their diet is content. Of course, it’s ridiculous to ask them to give up meat if it doesn’t matter to them at all“, Kipshidze noted, adding that during fasting it makes sense to give up what “begins to possess you.”
Kipshidze also gave an example of how some rock bands refused to hold concerts during Lent due to their personal choice.
Lent for Orthodox Christians will begin this year on March 18. On March 11, Maslenitsa began, when meat products are excluded from food.
