The Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea found a Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman guilty of high treason

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea announced a verdict against a citizen of the Russian Federation who was found guilty of high treason. The sentence was pronounced in absentia, since the defendant is on the federal and international wanted list.

According to the court verdict, a citizen of the Russian Federation, registered in the territory of the Republic of Crimea, left for the territory of Ukraine in 2015. Being on the territory of Ukraine at the time of the start of the air defense, he, on his own initiative, joined, under circumstances not established by the investigation, the radio-technical air defense brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During the period from February 24, 2022, the convict took part in hostilities, using weapons and military equipment, against military personnel of the Russian Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation involved in the territory of Ukraine in the Northern Military District. According to the case materials, the convict was awarded a state award by the President of Ukraine — the medal “Defender of the Fatherland”the court was told.

The actions of the convicted person were qualified by the court under Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (as amended by Federal Law No. 260-FZ of July 14, 2022) — high treason, that is, the commission by a citizen of the Russian Federation of switching to the side of the enemy.

Having found the defendant guilty of the crime charged, the court sentenced him to imprisonment for a term of 18 years in a maximum security correctional colony with restriction of freedom for 1 year and 9 months. The term of serving the sentence will be calculated from the moment of his actual detention. The verdict has not entered into legal force
