The visitor who desecrated the Memorial of the Heroic Defense of Sevastopol has had his punishment revised

The Third Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction in Sochi upheld the appeal of the prosecutor’s office of the city of Sevastopol and increased the punishment for the 36-year-old visiting man who desecrated the Memorial of the Heroic Defense of Sevastopol 1941-1942.

Earlier, in July 2024, the Sevastopol City Court found him guilty under Part 3 of Art. 354.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (desecration of symbols of Russia’s military glory, insult to the memory of defenders of the Fatherland, committed in public). It was established that on the night of April 12, 2024, a drunk man who did not have a specific place of residence in Sevastopol desecrated the symbol of Russia’s military glory, extinguishing the flame of the Eternal Flame at the Memorial of the Heroic Defense of Sevastopol 1941-1942. The man’s identity was quickly established by police officers. He was detained and taken into custody. The investigation was conducted by investigators from the Investigative Committee for the Leninsky District of the city of Sevastopol of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol. The court of first instance found him guilty and sentenced him to correctional labor. The city prosecutor’s office did not agree with the lenient court decision and filed an appeal requesting a more severe punishment, — reported the press service of the Sevastopol prosecutor’s office.

Today the appeal submission of the prosecutor’s office was satisfied. The man was sentenced to 1 year of imprisonment in a penal colony.

The verdict came into force.
