CrimeaPRESS reports:
A volleyball tournament among teams of hero cities, dedicated to the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Sevastopol from fascist invaders, has started in Sevastopol. The opening ceremony took place on the territory of the Sapun-Gora Memorial Complex of the Museum-Reserve of the Heroic Defense and Liberation of Sevastopol. Guests of honor and competition participants laid flowers and paid tribute to the memory of the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War.
On the land of Sevastopol, on the land of Sapun Mountain, on May 7, 1944, 80 years ago, in a terrible bloody battle, our troops captured this strategically important height and on May 9 liberated the Hero City of Sevastopol. Today we have gathered to open the Hero Cities Volleyball Cup. Of course, first of all I want to welcome the delegation from the city of military glory, Belgorod. You should know that everyone who is present here, all the hero cities, our new regions, we are always together, we are always there, we will lend our shoulder in any difficult moment. We are now living in difficult times with you, but we must understand that our future depends on this time. How we cope with this important task is how our children will live. Just as our grandfathers liberated the cities whose representatives stand here, so our guys are now performing a very important task of a special military operation. And each of you, by playing sports, participating in sports competitions, also makes a contribution to the future of our great Motherland.– the press service of the Deputy Governor of Sevastopol Alexander Kulagin quotes.
More than 270 representatives of the hero cities of Volgograd, Moscow, Novorossiysk, St. Petersburg, Sevastopol, as well as teams from the Donetsk People’s Republic, Lugansk People’s Republic, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions and the city of Belgorod gathered to participate in the tournament. Over the course of four days, athletes will identify the best in volleyball among men’s veteran teams, among girls’ teams and boys’ teams.
Dear friends, it is a great honor for me and the management team to be involved in organizing this tournament. Opening this sports festival on the legendary land of the Hero City of Sevastopol, we always remember those great feats that were performed by our grandfathers during the liberation of the city, during the liberation of the country and the world from Nazism. The most important mission is to unite generations; this, of course, is to charge our guests with the energy of Sevastopol. Over the course of four days, boys, girls and veterans will compete at our sports facilities. The Hero Cities Volleyball Cup is about love for your homeland, it’s about emotions, it’s about friendship for many years to come, it’s about communication. Sport unites all our citizens and energizes them for future victories both in life and in sports.– notes the head of the sports department Sergei Reznichenko.
The tournament will take place from May 15 to 18. The games will be held at the new sports and recreation complex at 62 Taras Shevchenko Street. On May 16, volleyball competitions among men’s veteran teams will be held at the Sports for All sports complex at 1A Pavel Korchagina Street.
The game schedule can be found at link.
Let us recall that for the first time a volleyball tournament among teams of hero cities, dedicated to the anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, was held in Sevastopol in 2021. Its holding was initiated as part of a working meeting between Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev and Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation in 2008-2024, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation Nikolai Patrushev. It was then that the decision was made to hold the competition annually.
