The water has dried up: Dam failure threatens the North Crimean Canal
CrimeaPRESS reports:
According to the head of the Melitopol district of the Zaporozhye region, Andrey Siguta, the North Crimean Canal stopped receiving water from the Kakhovka reservoir. He said in an interview withRIA Newsthat the water level had already dropped a meter below the fence.
Siguta clarified that the Kakhovka reservoir as such no longer exists, and only a small part of the water remains in the part of the reservoir located in the Kherson region, where the mouth of the North Crimean Canal is located.
The breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station occurred on June 6 at night. As a result of the accident, 11 of the station’s 28 spans collapsed, and an uncontrolled discharge of water began. The water level rose by 11 meters. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the incident served as an emergency on a federal scale. Charges in this incident were put forward by the Russian and Ukrainian authorities against each other.
Already on the morning of June 6, the head of the Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, warned of the possibility of the North Crimean Canal becoming shallow. He estimated the canal’s water reserves at more than 40 billion cubic meters. However, Aksyonov ruled out the possibility of flooding the Crimea and the lack of drinking water.
