“Theft season” in Crimea: those who like to “ride” in other people’s cars are detained

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Suspects of car thefts have been detained in Crimea. In the Nizhnegorsky district, a 70-year-old local resident discovered that a VAZ 21099 car was missing. The car was “stolen” from the yard of a private house.

During investigative and operational activities, employees of the Department of Internal Affairs of Russia in the Nizhnegorsky region quickly established the identity of the suspect. He turned out to be a 33-year-old resident of the Nizhnegorsky district, previously convicted of theft. The attacker explained that he lives with his uncle, who maintains friendly relations with the victim. The applicant came to see them the day before. Leaving the keys to his car on the nightstand, the guest decided to rest after the trip. At this time, the attacker invited his relative to go to the store for groceries, saying that the elderly man himself had offered to use his car. Despite the fact that the detainee does not have a driver’s license, he got behind the wheel and, together with his uncle, headed to the store, and then on the way home they decided to stop by some friends. Admits his guilt in full— said the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

An admission of guilt is good, of course, but a criminal case under Part 1 of Art. 166 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (wrongful seizure of a car or other vehicle without the purpose of theft) was initiated. The sanction of the article provides for a maximum penalty of imprisonment for a term of up to five years.

Whether the Kerch court will have mercy on the 17-year-old hijacker is also a big question. A 49-year-old local resident contacted the duty station of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Kerch with a report of a missing car. The man reported that he left the Ford in the courtyard of the apartment building where he lives, and in the morning the car was not there.

Having carried out a complex of operational-search measures, criminal investigation officers established the identity of the suspect. He turned out to be a 17-year-old local resident. The teenager told the police that at night, walking past a parked car on one of the city streets, he invited his friend to ride in what was supposedly his car. The young man was able to open the car and then, by connecting the ignition wires, started the engine. However, he could not go far and after about 500 meters he lost control, as a result of which he collided with an electrical pole. Having abandoned the car at the scene of the accident, the young men went home— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

The vehicle has now been seized and will be returned to its rightful owner. The thief is awaiting trial.
