There is a weak point in the “Your relative was in an accident” scheme! Fraud courier detained in Crimea
CrimeaPRESS reports:
In Crimea, police detained a suspect in a series of frauds against three pensioners. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea, three local residents aged 74, 83 and 89 years old came to the Krasnoperekopsky department with allegations of fraud.
Unknown people called their landline phones and told the pensioners that their relatives had been in an accident. To provide assistance to the victims, as well as to avoid criminal liability on the part of the perpetrators, they asked to collect money and transfer it to the courier.
Having lost their composure and not double-checking the information, the citizens agreed to the scammers’ terms and handed over a total of 450 thousand rubles.
Employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Crimea, together with colleagues from regional police departments, as a result of operational search activities, established the identity of the person involved in the commission of crimes. Operatives detained the suspect in the Black Sea region, where he arrived intending to continue his criminal acts. The detainee turned out to be a previously convicted 19-year-old young man, temporarily residing in Kerch.
At the police department, the attacker admitted that he found a part-time job on the Internet in one of the popular instant messengers. He acted under the guidance of a curator, who gave him tasks, the essence of which was that he had to collect funds and subsequently transfer them to an unidentified person on cards. He received 10% of each amount for this— said the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.
The investigator of the Krasnoperekopsky Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia initiated criminal cases on the grounds of a crime under Part 2 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The defendant was taken into custody. The detainee is being tested for involvement in similar acts on the territory of Crimea.
