They stole a chicken and occupied my shelf: if there are problems on the train, what should I do?

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Service experts Tutu They tell you what to do if something goes wrong while traveling by train. Let’s figure out what to do if your neighbors sit on the bottom shelf all the time, make noise, demand to give up your seat, and someone stole your favorite grilled chicken (or something more important).

There was a theft

You just returned from the toilet, look, but your chicken is not on the table, and something in foil is sticking out suspiciously from your neighbor’s bag… As soon as you realize that personal belongings are missing, immediately call the conductor — he must call the police. Let us remind you once again: do not leave valuables unattended. When going to the toilet or dining car, take a bag with documents, cards and cash. You can survive the theft of a chicken or things like sneakers or a T-shirt from your luggage, but a stolen phone or passport is already very serious.

Your regiment has been occupied

You bought the bottom shelf, and the neighbor above sits on it, refuses to leave and has even poured boiling water over the instant noodles. According to the new transportation rules, which came into force on September 1, 2023, you are obliged to let your neighbor eat. But — only three times a day: for breakfast from 7:00 to 10:00, for lunch from 12:00 to 15:00 and for dinner from 19:00 to 21:00. At the same time, a maximum of half an hour is allotted for food in the morning and evening, and a whole hour in the afternoon. All passengers can use the table and leave their food there. Of course, in practice everything is resolved through dialogue. Don’t be mean if the passengers above just need to eat, and politely ask for a shelf to be vacated when it’s been occupied for too long. If your neighbor sits on your shelf all the time, citing the fact that he is uncomfortable, and refuses to climb to his “second floor” — call the guides.

Yes, the new rules also apply to luggage. The place under the bottom bunk is for those traveling below, for those at the top there is an upper luggage rack. If the location and type of carriage are of great importance to you, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance. According to Tutu analysts, in 2023 the number of train ticket buyers in the application increased by 32%, and the share of purchased train tickets increased by 27%. Travelers are increasingly looking at train reviews and ratings before deciding to buy a ticket, as well as booking tickets in advance and paying for them later.

They demand to give way

Well, you don’t have to give up your seat. Chances are your bottom shelf was more expensive. Indeed, there are passengers who choose the top bunk in the hope of changing with someone. But it also happens that there were no other tickets, and the passenger really cannot climb to the top bunk for health reasons. Decide for yourself and use common sense. If your neighbor is behaving aggressively and still tries to take your place, call a guide.

Neighbors drink alcohol

Alcohol is not allowed on trains. The only exception is the dining car — provided that everything is in order with its license. At the same time, you won’t be able to take away a bottle or two of wine there either. Therefore, if you want to drink, go to the dining car and do not disturb your neighbors. And if they interfere with you, immediately call the guide. Maybe the situation can be resolved peacefully: for example, the neighbors will go to the dining car or you will be offered another compartment. And if all methods of resolving the conflict have been exhausted, call the police (this also needs to be done through a guide). The main rule: do not be afraid to seem uncomfortable, your safety and peace of mind are most important. If the neighbors are simply noisy, ask the conductor if it is possible to change seats or carriages.

You’ve lost your pet

According to the rules, if an animal escapes and goes for a walk on the train, the conductor is obliged to check the tags, clarify information about passengers traveling with pets, walk through the carriages and find out if the owners are there. If the owner is not found, the animal must be taken to the luggage compartment and handed over to the station staff at the station.

When traveling with an animal, it is better to choose a compartment car or SV — this way he will be less likely to get lost, as well as the lower bunk. Put a collar on the animal with the owner’s information or attach an address card with your number on it. Give your pet a sedative. Traveling with pets is not possible in all carriages — on Tutu, carriages where pets are allowed are marked with a “paw” icon.

According to the rules, you cannot remove the animal from its carrier during the trip. In practice, this does not always happen. If the animal is still lost, run to the guide. Check whether the frightened pet could have hid under a shelf or hidden in some other secluded place, interview passengers, including those in other carriages.
