October 17 — Day of the anthem of the Hero City — “Legendary Sevastopol”. The song by composer Vano Muradeli and poet Pyotr Gradov turns 69 today. It was written for the centenary of the First Defense of Sevastopol in 1854-1855, and was first performed at a concert for the anniversary of this event in 1954.
The composer Vano Ilyich Muradeli was known and loved in Sevastopol. During the war years, he led the Central Red Navy Song and Dance Ensemble, which performed at the fronts and fleets. When the city was liberated from the fascist invaders in 1944, the ensemble performed in front of the people of Sevastopol. Ten years later, in 1954, it was the 100th anniversary of the First Defense of the city, and the Black Sea sailors turned to the composer with a request to write a song for the city. The song, of course, needed words — they were written by the poet Pyotr Mikhailovich Gradov. They say that before taking up poetry, he read everything he had on the history of Sevastopol both in the Crimean War and in the Great Patriotic War,” recalled Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev.
On October 17, 1954, the song “Legendary Sevastopol” was performed by a choir, which included civilian and military groups, at the Black Sea Fleet stadium. There was no free space in the stands, and in the stadium there were five thousand performers singing the future anthem, accompanied by a combined military orchestra.
