Today we remember the beginning of the Kerch-Eltigen landing operation. It was 80 years ago

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Today marks 80 years since the start of the Kerch-Eltigen landing operation. On November 1, 1943, overcoming fierce enemy resistance, Soviet troops landed on Crimean soil.

The commander of the 318th Infantry Division Vasily Gladkov recalled: “The fire was raging over the bridgehead. There was a storm at sea. And there was a storm on the ground: clouds of earth and small stones rose.”.

Today the Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov recalled this heroic page of Crimean history. He clarified that the Red Army soldiers held the bridgehead in Eltigen for 36 days in the face of heavy enemy fire, and then unexpectedly went on the attack and made a rush towards the German rear, capturing Mount Mithridates. A few days later, the landing force had to be evacuated, but it completed its task. And Eltigen forever went down in history as “Tierra del Fuego.”

The Kerch-Eltigen operation played an important role in the liberation of Crimea. Its success became possible thanks to the unparalleled courage and valor of our soldiers. Many participants in the operation were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Eternal glory to the liberating warriors! Their feat will never be forgotten— emphasized the Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov.
