Two residents of Crimea (what kind of Crimeans are they?!) acted on orders from the SBU. What the Supreme Court decided
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The verdict of the Simferopol District Court of the Republic of Crimea entered into legal force, by which two residents of the village of Ukromnoye were found guilty of illegally acquiring, carrying and transporting an explosive device committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy using the Internet. The convicts, following the instructions of the SBU representative, conspired to commit a crime against public safety and assigned roles. This was reported by the press service of the Supreme Court of Crimea.
According to the verdict of the court of first instance, one of the defendants served in the SBU from 2001 to 2008 and was trained in mine explosives. Having a negative attitude towards the special military operation carried out by Russia on the territory of Ukraine, he maintained contact with an SBU officer. In February 2023, the same employee suggested that the defendant find a deserted place on the territory of the republic suitable for planting the components of an improvised explosive device, with subsequent transfer, through third parties, and concealment in this cache of the components of such a device, which they would need to pick up.
The defendants fulfilled their part of the criminal conspiracy. In March 2023, men seized an improvised delayed-action explosive device from a cache (stash), which was illegally transferred to a car. There, an explosive device was discovered and seized by law enforcement officersthe message says.
The defendants admitted their guilt in the trial court.
By the verdict of the Simferopol District Court of the Republic of Crimea, residents of the republic were convicted of committing a crime under paragraph “a, c” of Part 3 of Art. 222.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The court sentenced one convict (a former SBU employee) to 9 years of imprisonment in a maximum security correctional colony, with a fine of 400,000 rubles, and the second person involved in the case — 8 years of imprisonment in a maximum security correctional colony, with a fine of 300,000 rubles.
Having disagreed with the decision of the court of first instance, lawyers filed appeals on behalf of the convicts, and the prosecutor’s office also filed an appeal against the said verdict.
As a result of the appeal review, the judicial panel of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea excluded the qualifying feature “illegal possession of explosive devices” from the conviction. In this connection, the court reduced the basic sentence for each of the convicts by 2 months. The rest of the same sentence was left unchanged.
