Vladimir Putin announced his participation in the presidential elections
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A response to the public’s request.
Vladimir Putin has agreed to participate in the presidential elections in 2024. He announced this during a conversation after the ceremony in the Kremlin for the Day of Heroes of the Fatherland. As clarified TASS, Speaker of the DPR Parliament Artem Zhoga made a corresponding request to Putin. The President of the Russian Federation agreed.
Let us note that Vladimir Putin is running for the post of Head of State for the fifth time. If he wins, he will hold the post of head of state for another six years, until 2030.
Putin was first elected to the highest government post in 2000 for a four-year term. After the resignation of the first President of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin, on December 31, 1999, he was appointed acting. On January 12, 2000, the initiative group nominated him for the early elections of the Head of State, and a day later Putin agreed to participate in them, which he announced while speaking at St. Petersburg State University.
Putin announced his intention to run for the 2004 elections during the Direct Line on December 18, 2003. At the end of his term in 2008, he left the post because, according to the Constitution, he could not hold it for more than two terms in a row. Dmitry Medvedev was elected the new President of Russia, and Putin became Head of Government.
On September 24, 2011, Medvedev invited United Russia to support Putin’s candidacy in the 2012 presidential elections. Putin gave his consent, won and, taking into account the updated legislation, took the post of president for not four, but six years.
In 2018, as this time, Putin did not answer the question until the last minute whether he would seek a new presidential term. In his opinion, the early announcement of such plans has a bad effect on the work of officials, who begin to pay more attention to the election campaign than to their main work. Six years ago, Putin announced his participation in the elections on December 6 — at a meeting with veterans and workers of the GAZ automobile plant.
In 2023, the announcement of the intention to run for election took place on December 8 — a day after the date of voting was set by the Federation Council. According to the law, after the decision of the Federation Council, candidates must submit documents to the Central Election Commission within 20-25 days (depending on whether the person is a self-nominated candidate or represents a political party).
This time, the constitutional restriction prohibiting the President from being elected for more than two consecutive terms does not apply. In 2020, amendments were made to the country’s basic law — the head of state in effect at that time will be able to run for the highest office without taking into account previous terms.
At a plenary meeting, the Federation Council adopted a resolution calling the presidential elections of the Russian Federation for March 17, 2024. As reported by the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, the presidential elections of the Russian Federation will for the first time be multi-day, they will be held from March 15 to 17.
Putin’s decision to go to the polls is essentially a response to the public’s request. According to the latest survey by the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion, the level of Russians’ trust in Putin amounts to 78.5%, and the level of approval of his activities is 75.8%. The study was conducted from November 27 to December 3, among 1.6 thousand adult Russians.
According to the Public Opinion Foundation, the majority of Russians (70%) support the nomination of Vladimir Putin for a new term, as evidenced by data from a study conducted from October 12 to November 13 among 6.1 thousand adult respondents. Moreover, this demand, according to sociologists, has more than doubled in recent years.
