Warning: receiving money on a card from an unknown sender may be the beginning of fraud
Krympress reports:
The State Duma told how scammers can use a scheme with an unexpected transfer of money to the victim.
The receipt of money on a bank card from an unknown sender can be both just a mistake and the beginning of fraud, the Office for the Organization for the Control of the Unlawful Use of Information and Communication Technology (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.
It is recommended to take the following steps. Check your account: make sure that the money is really credited to your account by checking the balance through a mobile application or Internet bank. Message about the crediting of funds may be a fake— advise in management.
Also, the UBK is advised to contact the bank and not spend the money received until the circumstances are clarified, since this can be regarded as unreasonable enrichment, which entails the obligation to return the amount and possible legal costs. They also noted that all operations for return should be carried out through your bank.
In recent years, attackers often use the so -called “erroneous dispatch” in order to create an occasion to contact the victim, notes the member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, the federal coordinator of the Digital Russia party project Anton Nemkin.
After transferring the money, scammers can contact the owner of the card, impersoning representatives of the bank or random senders, and try to persuade the funds to refunds to stand -up accounts, ”he said.
The scheme with an unexpected translation can have several variations. One of them is the translation with the subsequent call from the “bank employee” or “erroneous sender”, which persistently asks to return the money, providing account number or card, different from those from which the transfer received. Fraudsters may also argue that the translation was made by mistake as part of the transaction and threaten legal consequences, creating a sense of fear and haste in the victim.
Another popular variation is the use of a translation as a bait to obtain personal data. Attackers can ask you to send money back indicating the card data or through dubious services, which allows them to access the victim’s bank account. In some cases, scammers offer to follow the link to cancel the “erroneous” translation, which leads to phishing sites stolen accounting data— said Nemkin.
In the case of an unknown translation, it is extremely important not to succumb to panic and not to perform rash actions. “First you should check your bank account through an official mobile bank or personal account to make sure that the funds are really credited, and not displayed in the form of a false notification. It is also useful to make screenshots of the operation and fix any suspicious contacts related to the translation, ”Nemkin explained.
Appeal to the bank is a necessary step to protect its funds.
Bank specialists can check the transfer and give recommendations on further actions. It is categorically impossible to spend the received funds, since in the event of an error or fraud, the bank has the right to request their return— warned the deputy.
