We are waiting for a starfall! On the night of August 12, up to 100 meteors per hour can be observed above the Crimea

Krympress reports:

The starry sky of August will decorate the traditional August star from the constellation Perseus — Perseids, whose action falls on the period from July 17 to August 31, and a maximum of August 12— according to the planetarium website.

Radiant Perseid — the area of the sky, where, as it seems, meteor is originated — located on the border of the constellations Perseus, Giraffe and Cassiopeia. On the day of the maximum of the meteor stream after sunset, the radiant Perseid is located above the northeast horizon, and by midnight and by dawn it rises high in the zenith area, scientists explained. The best time for observation is from midnight until dawn.

Typically, the increased background of meteor activity is observed a week before and after the peak of Perseid — from August 5 to 20. Therefore, if the weather permits, the Perseid meteors can be observed over the northeastern horizon all of August, and the maximum number of meteors is observed in the night from August 10 to 13. The peak of the activity of the starfall is expected at 23:00 Moscow time on August 12, 2025— experts explain.

During the period of peak activity, up to 100 meteors per hour is expected, scientists recommend observing the «Zvezdopad» far from urban lighting.

Perseids are formed as a result of the passage of the Earth through a loop of dust particles released by a comet 109/Swift-Tuttle, whose perihelium passes near the earth’s orbit. The comet turns around the Sun with a period of about 134, the last time it approached us in December 1992, and the next perihelia will be held on July 12 in 2126. Every August Earth passes through a cloud of cosmic dust and ice left by it. The smallest particles, the size of a grain of sand, burn in the earth’s atmosphere, forming bright tracks — “star rain”.
