What can the “Sea Scorpion”, invented by scientists and students of SevSU, do?

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The first tests of an unmanned device for collecting waste in water areas were carried out in Sevastopol. The Sea Scorpion drone was designed by students of SevSU. The device is capable of getting rid of waste and oil spills, and it can be controlled remotely.

In one trip to the sea, the “scorpion” can collect half a cube of garbage. The built-in mesh can hold so much. The main advantage of the device is mobility. Its light weight — 60 kilograms — allows it to be transported on any vehicle and quickly delivered to the shore. One person can handle the controls.

At the moment, the device is controlled from several remote controls. For example, this one is designed to regulate movement. This one opens the curtain, but in the near future we will implement this on one convenient console, so that in the future the operator does not need to switch between several devices. So he works with a radio signal and on the water the radio signal slides off, let’s say, from the waves, and is reflected,” said Daria Solntseva, a master’s student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Northern State University.

To ensure a stable connection with the device, the antenna was raised upward. So the device became like a sea scorpion. Hence the name of the model. The unmanned cleaner can operate at a distance of up to 500 meters from the shore.

The scorpion floats contain two batteries. Their power is enough for three hours of continuous operation. But the young engineers also provided an additional power source — a solar panel. It accumulates energy constantly, this allows you to extend the operating time of the device.

The body of the Sea Scorpion is made of low-density polyethylene. 80% of the materials from which the device is made are made in Russia. According to the students’ idea, the project will solve the problem of garbage along the coast. The device can be used for minor stains without calling in expensive special equipment. The device is also capable of getting rid of oil stains by spraying a special substance on them. Scientists claim that the process is harmless to the environment.

In the future, we have a plan that we will attach a camera or even it will work like a robot vacuum cleaner — see garbage and collect it. These will be tracking sensors, for example, some kind of scanner — scanning water, and so on,” explained Alena Zubtsova, a student at the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology of the Northern State University Polytechnic Institute.

The students won a grant of 500 thousand rubles. They plan to spend this money on upgrading the device. At the same time, a prototype is being developed for mass production. The body is almost ready, all technical elements need to be perfected to simplify and make production cheap.

It is planned that next year, I think we will already launch it into series and sell it throughout the country. Since today there are no such devices in Russia. There is a similar one in Holland, for example, in the port of Rotterdam, they call it WasteShark. The principle is similar. Well, there are literally several other companies in the world that make similar products.said Stanislav Roshchupkin, associate professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology of the Polytechnic Institute of Northern State University.

City authorities like this practical innovation. The “sea scorpion” has already been used.

“Sea Scorpion” will be able to clean up garbage in the bays of Sevastopol. This problem is relevant for us. According to the director of the MoreAgroBioTech REC Alexey Aleksandrovich Chuklin, the device is planned to be used for its intended purpose in Artbukhta and at the yacht marina in Balaklavasaid Sevastopol Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev.
